The Growth Continues

Clinic volunteer Dr. Katia Adams has seen the number of Good Shepherd Clinic patients increase

The Good Shepherd Clinic has experienced exciting growth since Dr. Mark Weaver, Organizing Pastor for Grace Presbyterian Church in Dawsonville, Georgia, began sharing his vision of a clinic for those with no health insurance. Initially, church members took on many roles in their journey to establish a clinic for the Dawson County community, and in September, 2009 the clinic opened its doors in the basement of the church. There were three exam rooms and an office where Prescription Assistance volunteers worked during clinic hours to help provide free prescription assistance to clinic patients. Dr. Weaver passed away in 2010, but his vision lives on.

In 2011 Good Shepherd Clinic became a stand-alone 501(c)3 non-profit organization, no longer part of Grace Presbyterian Church. An expanded Board of Directors, drawing on talented volunteers, has helped lead the clinic to its current status as a vitally important part of the community. For the past five years the clinic has enjoyed modern facilities at 200 Dawson Commons Circle, Suite 200 in Dawsonville, thanks to the generous support of Northside Hospital. Expanded services now include general medical care; basic dental care; women’s Wellness screening; prescription assistance; eye exams and glasses; auditory services; cardiology services; and information, referral and advocacy for health and support services. Another vital program is Grace-in-a-Box, a meal ministry of Grace Presbyterian Church whereby volunteers from the church and from Good Shepherd distribute thousands of meals each year to those in need. Funding assistance is provided by Big Canoe Chapel Women’s Guild.

Good Shepherd has come a long way since its humble beginnings, and as a result of this growth, the clinic is moving to expanded new facilities only a short distance from its current location, thanks to the generous support of Northeast Georgia Health System (see related story, “GSC Moving to Expanded Facilities”). Thanks to all of the dedicated volunteers, supporters, and patients for helping Good Shepherd Clinic continue to grow and expand its services to the Dawson County community.
